Abstract

Standardization refers to activities aimed at achieving streamlining in a particular field by establishing provisions for common and multiple application concerning existing and potential tasks. This activity is evident in the development and publication of standards. For the collection and use of medical information, certain standards have to be followed to ensure the effective transfer, use, and interaction of such information. To understand, which standards need to be developed to meet the complex demands of the healthcare sector for sharing information, we have divided the standards into four categories: structural, lexical, communication and security.
Standards and standardization play an important role in both healthcare and information technology spheres, particularly in the development of digital medical record systems. With EHR (electronic health records) standardization, the interconnection between medical information systems 

(MIS) can be established to communicate and exchange medical information with one another. The highest attention should be paid to HL7 and ISO 13606 standards. Given the fact that Ukraine has an interoperable EHR system at the national level, all MIS providers must meet the requirements and technical specifications of eHealth. EHR/MIS compatibility issues, as well as syntactic and semantic compatibility, should be taken into account when developing MIS. Syntactic compatibility ensures the exchange of medical information by displaying the information between relevant parts of the information system. Semantic compatibility is important for improving the quality and safety of healthcare, improving efficiency, and reducing medical errors.
Health Level 7 (HL7) standards provide the basis for sharing, integrating, and retrieving electronic health information. HL7 includes standards that formulate the general information used in all HL7 protocols, while other standards define a detailed structure and describe medical records in the context of modeling basic medical procedures.
