Abstract

Rapid expansion of different applications of space-to-ground communication systems such as satellite television calls for development of simple and cheap antennas satisfying various practical demands. From this viewpoint, one of the relevant tasks is the design of easily transportable antennas. Such task can be solved by using a sectional paraboloidal reflector, which, for example, could consist of six segments jointed at the top of reflector. All segments of such an antenna are equipped with hard edges placed on the back side of the mirror. All segments are jointed one to another by calibrated screws and fixed by a common flange at the top of antenna, that provides stiff and accurate assembling of the whole construction as well as its operation reliability.

Based on the current method, the algorithm and computer program were developed and employed to analyze a paraboloid with a panel reflector flange at the top of antenna. Different types of exciters such as an open-ended circular waveguide, a conical horn, a scalar conical horn, an open-ended rectangular waveguide, sectoral and pyramidal horns are represented by their mathematical models performed as separate subroutines.

A set of input parameters includes diameter and focal length of the reflector related to the wavelength, as well as the type and electrical size of an exciter. Obtained simulation results are analyzed to determine physical characteristics showing an effect of a panel disk reflector on antenna gain, surface utilization factor, major and side lobes of the directive radiation pattern. It is shown that the effect of the disk on above mentioned parameters can be minimized by an appropriate choice of disk size and location. Also, it is determined how the panel reflector effects side lobes of the directive radiation pattern.
