The areas of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Ukraine, being biologically renewable raw material, can be considered as biogas sources. Only in Ukraine more than 10 million tones of MSW are formed annually. In the result of anaerobic fermentation every ton of municipal solid waste can evolve 120...200 m3 of biogas and all waste areas 800 thousand tones of methane annually. By the reason of the existing MSW areas an ecological situation in Ukraine becomes worse. Methane is a biogas basic component, possessing in 21 times more of greenhouse potential than carbon dioxide, so the amount of methane, getting annually into the atmosphere from the MSW areas is 16 million tones of СО2. The results of MSW areas inspection have been reported. The biogas production on each of these areas can reach 1200 m3/h methane. A heating value of biogas is 20-25 МJ/nm3. Biogas can be used for cars fueling and as a fuel for cogeneration units, simultaneously producing electric power and heat.
