Abstract

There is a need for air separation units (ASU) for the production of 1000 kg/h of liquid oxygen. To ensure their high efficiency it is necessary to make the units based on the medium-pressure cycles. Two schemes of ASU with the expander-compressor units (ECU) of two- and multi-shaft design in which the  expansion work of a part of the processed air is converted into an additional refrigerating capacity are considered. It is noted that in ECU a turbo reducer  should be used to ensure the optimal rotation frequency of the compressor stage (CS) shaft which is mechanically connected with the expander stage (ES) of the unit. A modal and structural optimization of ECU used in the two schemes of ASU has allowed to improve their efficiency and increase the yield of liquid oxygen. Optimization calculations of ASU together with ECU showed that the coefficient of efficiency of the two units had similar values, but different refrigerating capacity. This opportunity  allowed to reduce the specific energy consumption in ASU with ECU of multi-shaft design from 1,17 to 1,06 kWh/kg of liquid oxygen. The studies showed that ASU that produces 1000 kg/h of liquid oxygen can be made on the basis of a centrifugal turbo compressor of «Ingersoll Rand» company with the discharge pressure of 4,2 MPa.
