System analysis of a single-stage Gifford-McMahon cryogenic refrigerator is performed using a wave approach to modeling the work of a regenerative heat exchanger. A mathematical model of the cryogenic refrigerator built on the basis of the material and power balance equations.By means of comparing the results of the mathematical model with the published experimental data on the work of a single-stage Gifford-McMahon cryogenic refrigerator, the adequecy of the model has been verified. The estimated efficiency of the regenerative heat exchanger is close to 100%. The main source of thermodynamic losses in the analyzed cryogenic refrigerator is due to losses in the gas heat transfer with the wall of the working cylinder. The design of the working cylinder with a developed heat exchange surface which makes it possible to reduce a thermodynamic loss is proposed.
