A modernized hypocycloidal electron spectrometer is presented as well as new possibilities of the technique for the studies of slow (0–10 eV) electron backscattering by polycrystalline Mo and Ta metal surfaces. The obtained energy dependences of elastic 180° reflection intensity, total reflection coefficient are analyzed as well as threshold spectra at low-energy electron backscattering.
A fine structure in the threshold spectra of the samples under investigation is revealed, resulting from the resonance 2πg state of the N2 molecule.
