Ukrainian Carpathian: 25 years after Chernobyl

We present the results for radiocaesium contamination of the soils and some plants and mushrooms of the Ukrainian Carpathians. The increased content of 137Cs is noted in the southern part of the mountains, when compared with the Eastern Beskydy. Basing on the studies for the soil contamination changes occurring with depth, an insignificant 137Cs-contamination of the fruit bodies of mushrooms and plants is associated with low accessibility level of the radionuclide present in the soil. We conclude that, in the present conditions, the migration processes contribute little to the changes of the radionuclide amounts in the soils of the region.References
