The role and meaning of sport and physical culture in the life of modern student youth are considered in the article. The reasons for the emergence of interest in sports and physical culture in general are analyzed. It is substantiated that health is not the main goal of doing sports, the formation of bodies, which would correspond to changing notions of normality in society, comes first
