The article analyzes the artistic, pedagogical, and musicalenlightenment activities of Oleh Tymoshenko, an outstanding Ukrainian choral conductor and public figure whose work played a decisive role in the development of academic choral culture in the second half of the twentieth century. A central focus of the study is his many years of work with the Honoured Choral Capella of the South-Western Railway, which became an important center of the choral enlightenment movement in Ukraine.
The aim of the research is to highlight Oleh Tymoshenko’s activities as an organizer of choral life, to determine the specific features of his performing and pedagogical concept, and to reveal the significance of the Honoured Choral Capella of the South-Western Railway in the musical life of Ukraine in the second half of the twentieth century.
The article traces the stages of the ensemble’s formation under Tymoshenko’s leadership and elucidates the principles of his rehearsal work, including requirements for vocal and choral technique, intonational accuracy, ensemble coherence, and stylistic adequacy of performance. Particular attention is paid to the educational function of the Capella and its active concert activity aimed at popularizing Ukrainian and world choral classics, as well as at fostering a high level of musical culture among a broad audience.
The ensemble’s repertoire policy is analyzed, marked by stylistic diversity and encompassing works from various historical periods, including complex vocal-symphonic compositions. The performance of such works by an amateur choir testified to the ensemble’s approach to high professional standards. It is demonstrated that it was within the framework of the South-Western Railway Capella’s activities that Tymoshenko realized his concept of the choir as both an artistic and an educational organism capable of influencing the spiritual and aesthetic environment of society.
The research methodology is based on a combination of historical-cultural, analytical, biographical, and source-study approaches. An important source consists of the author’s own recollections as a student of Tymoshenko and a direct participant in the creative process, which lends the study documentary credibility.
Conclusions. The article emphasizes the system-forming character of Oleh Tymoshenko’s activities, which contributed to the establishment of high standards of Ukrainian choral performance and to the emergence of the Honoured Choral Capella of the South-Western Railway as one of the leading centers of the musical-enlightenment movement.
