Abstract

This article is devoted to investigating the role of art therapy as an effective tool for the psycho-emotional rehabilitation of children who have experienced the traumatic impact of military events, as well as the implementation of this approach in the practice of social workers. The paper examines the theoretical foundations of art therapy and its functions, which contribute to reducing stress levels, depressive symptoms, and anxiety, and to fostering positive self-esteem and social adaptation. Significant attention is given to a description of methodological approaches. It elucidates the impact of the main art therapy techniques on the restoration of a child’s internal resources, enabling the child to re-establish emotional balance and integrate traumatic experiences through the creative process without direct verbal reconstruction of the trauma.

Furthermore, the article emphasizes the key role of the social worker, who, possessing both traditional and specific art therapy approaches, creates a confidential space of trust and safety for working with children. Empirical data from both international and domestic studies are presented, demonstrating the positive effect of art therapy on reducing anxiety, improving cognitive processes, and enhancing the social integration of children. However, the limitations of this approach are also noted, particularly in cases where art therapy may be less effective.

The analysis underscores the necessity of implementing cross-sectoral programs that combine art therapy with other methods of psycho-pedagogical support, aimed at the comprehensive rehabilitation of children affected by war. The article holds strategic significance for the development of effective support and trauma prevention programs, which will contribute to the harmonious restoration of children’s mental health and ensure their stable social adaptation.
