The article covers the processes of land degradation as a result of water and wind erosion, contamination with heavy metals, radioactive substances, viral contamination of soil and plants, and other natural and anthropogenic factors. Quantitative and qualitative indicators of land degradation that contribute to their withdrawal from intensive use are substantiated. It is shown that the use of degraded and unproductive lands is economically unprofitable, and ecologically — harmful, which negatively affects the environment. These processes have led to excessive anthropogenic pressure on natural resources and especially on land, which leads to their further activation and increases the negative impact. One of the key factors of this situation is a scientifically unreasonable increase in row crops of export-oriented direction: corn and grain, sunflower, rapeseed, crops that are most depleting the soil. A set of measures to restore the productivity of degraded and unproductive lands is presented. Recommendations for the transformation of degraded and unproductive lands into other lands are proposed in order to restore their productivity and on this basis to improve the natural environment, including life. Methodological approaches to the transfer of some lands to others in terms of natural-agricultural taxa (region, district, agro-group) with calculated quantitative indicators in kind and in monetary terms are demonstrated. These recommendations will allow local governments and businesses to constantly take specific measures to restore the productivity of land resources on the basis of relevant specific developments, which will also contribute to improving the environment.
