С помощью основных молекулярно-биологических методов можно проводить типирование M. tuberculosis. Обнаружено более 2000 различных генотипов, некоторые из них распространены повсеместно, другие встречаются реже или характерны для какого-то конкретного региона. Так, наиболее распространенным генотипом является Beijing, несколько реже встречается LA-M и Haarlem. С генотипом Beijing часто связывают неблагоприятное течение туберкулеза и более частое обнаружение устойчивости к противотуберкулезным препаратам
