Translation of english popular scientific text into ukrainian language: strategies and features of their implementation

Abstract

The article examines the peculiarities of translating English-language specialised scientific texts into Ukrainian, in particular, on the example of Stephen Hawking’s popular science work A Brief History of Time. With the active exchange of information between scientific communities, the translation of scientific literature is becoming increasingly important. Hawking’s book is a classic example of popular science literature, as it contains a large number of terms and complex conceptual ideas in physics and cosmology that require special attention when translating. The choice of A Brief History of Time was made due to its importance in the field of science and cultural context, as well as the complexity of its presentation style and the richness of its terminology.

First of all, the article discusses the problems that arise when translating terms, and explores various adaptation strategies used by translators to preserve the accuracy and comprehensibility of the content of a scientific text.

Particular attention is paid to terminological equivalence, the difficulty of which is not only in the adequacy of the terms, but also in the preservation of scientific accuracy. It is also important to note that the style of scientific literature typical of English-language texts requires special efforts to adapt it to the Ukrainian context.

The article emphasises the importance of cultural adaptation in translation, as scientific texts often contain cultural realities that may be difficult to understand for the target audience.

As a result, the study provides a deep understanding of the strategies for translating English-language specialised scientific texts into Ukrainian, which is of practical importance for the development of Ukrainian scientific terminology and enrichment of popular science literature.
