Objective. The research deals with the definition of theoretical questions aimed at identifying the nature of the code and its functions in culture and arts from the point of view of the different concepts and paradigms in the modern scientific literature. The methodology of the study is to apply a systematic approach that focuses on the study of the nature and functions of the code of culture and arts. The scientific novelty of this work is to extend the concepts of the nature and functions of the cultural code. Based on the research of semantic and cultural content of the concept "code" the study gives its basic definitions, identifies its presence and comprehension in the scientific (philosophy, mathematics, computer science, semiotics, linguistics, cultural studies, literature, art, etc.) and non-scientific sphere (mythology, religion , fashion, artistic creativity, everyday life, socio-cultural activities of people). Conclusions. The problem of culture and art code belongs to interdisciplinary field of humanitarian and natural disciplines. The semiotic nature of the code has a long history and is associated with the process of encoding of information in various forms of spiritual culture and arts. Code is a formula, stamp, image, sign, symbol, which have constant quality, but can be transformed depending on the cultural and historical environment. The main types of cultural codes are the following: logical, semantic, stylistic, socio-cultural relations and mutual understanding. Any code is part of the communicative process, therefore, must be recognized and understood by all participants of communication. Its functions are in the communication – intersubjectivity, interactivity, perception and cognition.
