The purpose of the study is determined by the isolation of the creative biography of the artist in a separate plane of research with the mandatory fixing in the coordinates of the socio-cultural context. The vector of the chosen study is one of the stages of the creative formation of D.M. Gnatyuk - the period of his directorial practice. Focusing on the production of the opera «Quiet Don» by I. Dzerzhinsky, we have the opportunity to analyze the communicative system of the mid-twentieth century objectively. The methodology of the research is to apply historical and cultural methods, which makes it possible to examine the formation of a creative person in the context of socio-cultural dynamics of Ukraine. The proposed interdisciplinary approach to the problem's consideration creates optimal conditions for the study of the essence of domestic opera performance in the projection of the creative steps of D.M. Gnatyuk. The scientific novelty of the work consists in the fact that for the first time the review presents a significant amount of archival sources, an epistolary workpiece that stimulates the objective and unbiased display of the socio-cultural space of Ukraine of the twentieth century. Conclusions. Analyzing the creative steps of the master - D. Gnatyuk in the projection of his directing practice, we have the opportunity to know the system of life orientations of the person, to feel the confrontation between the internal and external in the space of artistic searches and approbations, to know the essence of the cultural and artistic and socio-political intentions of the Ukrainian environment of the twentieth century.
