Purpose of the Article. To identify the informational and symbolic role of the veils and staffage in mosaics with portraits of bishops in the altar apse of the Basilica of Sant' Apollinare in Classe. To analyze whether the images of architectural details and fabrics had real prototypes in the church ceremonial of that time, or they were used on mosaics only as decorative objects that have no connection with the rite and the meaning of the image. The methodology of the study includes formal, comparative, historical, iconographic and semiotic methods. The scientific novelty of the work is to uncover the symbolic role of architectural, textile and decorative images in mosaics as important elements of the theological idea of the iconographic program and altar decoration in general. They also contributed to a deeper experience of the sacrament of the Eucharist – the most important liturgical action. Conclusions. In the portraits of the bishops in the apse of The Basilica of Sant' Apollinare in Classe, the image of the veil and the ciborium which are open to the middle of the altar reflect the prayer service and service of the bishops around a real altar Table in the middle of the apse. Four semiarches of ciboria in this system make a single ciborium dome over the altar throne. The mentioned issue is also confirmed by the symbolic images of crowns and holy bread.
