Comparative analysis of performances of men's national teams of Ukraine at the European team sports championships.

Abstract

Purpose: to study and characterize the performances of Ukrainian men's national teams in sports
that are part of the program of the Summer Olympic Games, such as: football, basketball,
volleyball, handball, field hockey and water polo. Materials and methods. In the course of the
research, the materials of publications and sports periodicals related to the research topic,
statistical information from the official websites of European international sports federations /
associations of team sports and other Internet sources were processed. Research methods: analysis
and generalization of data, theoretical interpretation, analysis of documentary (statistical)
materials, systems analysis. The study was conducted from January to April 2022. Results of the
research. The European Championships are currently prestigious official international
competitions. The best teams of the continent take part in the final tournaments, among which the
national team of Ukraine often plays. Studies have shown that in the twentieth century the
Ukrainian athletes successfully competed in international competitions as part of the USSR
national teams. In the years of Independence, the number of participations in the final tournaments
of the European Championships is preceded by the national teams of Ukraine in basketball and
handball, eight and seven, respectively. We have established that the best result in these
competitions is currently the sixth place of volleyball players (1993) and basketball players (2013),
as well as the seventh place of water polo players (1995) and the same volleyball players (2019).
Over the last decade, the men's national teams of Ukraine in volleyball (2019) and football (2020)
were able to reach the quarterfinals of the final tournament of the Euro. Conclusions: the article
studies and characterizes the performances of national teams of Ukraine at the European
Championships in team sports, which are included in the program of the Summer Olympic Games.
Analyzing our research, we state that Ukrainian «players» participated in the final tournaments
more than 25 times. At some international competitions, they «stopped» one step before reaching
the semifinals, namely: volleyball (1993, 1997, 2019), basketball (2013), football (2020). Once, in
2012, Ukraine hosted the final tournament of the European Football Championship.
