The article shows that the transformational changes that occur in the global energy market, due to: reduced demand for energy in the world economy; changes in the structure of energy sources; emergence of new countries among leading energy producers. Changed environment requires market participants to make relevant strategic solutions. The analysis of strategic goals and objectives and mechanisms of forming the EU Energy Union, proved their compliance with modern challenges and most important trends of the world energy market. It allows us to consider the EU Energy Union as an important factor of the global energy market development. Comparative analysis of strategic goals and objectives contained in the "Framework Strategy for Resilient Energy Union with a Forward-Looking Climate Change policy" (2015), "Energy 2020. Strategy for a competitive, sustainable and secure energy" (2010), and the Strategy "Europe 2020" (2010) shows the continuity of the EU strategic targets in the energy sector and evolutionary nature of its development. Experience in implementing strategic initiatives and instruments of the EU Energy Union, primarily – LNG hubs, "Projects of common interest" in energy infrastructure, the initiatives "Global excellence in making policy decisions on energy efficiency» and «Shift2Rail» – less green-house gas intensive modes of transport, as well as the European industrial initiatives in the energy sector, after their appropriate adaptations, can be used for Ukraine's integration into the integrated European energy market, to increase Ukraine's energy independence and energy securityReferences
