The article examines the history of the formation of military (combat) traditions and rituals in Ukrainian military formations as a mechanism for maintaining high morale of the army, with an emphasis on the historical experience of Ukraine in the struggle for its statehood.
The role of combat traditions as a strategic factor in the formation of military-patriotic education of the army is considered.
The historical experience of the Ukrainian people, where a special role belongs to the Cossacks, as a unique phenomenon in the context of the study of military and, in particular, combat traditions, is analyzed.
The paper analyzes the role of the traditions of Cossacks' respect for their officers and their protection in battle. In the Ukrainian Cossack army, according to researchers, the Cossacks were ready to give their lives for their commanders not because of the worship of their social status, but for their talent as a commander, respect and love for Ukrainian Cossack traditions.
Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the extremely important tradition of Cossack brotherhood.
The results of the study can serve as a methodological basis for the development of the latest combat and national traditions of the Ukrainian army
