Scientific novelty. For the first time in domestic art criticism, the development of the sports and competitive context of social dances of the twentieth century has been investigated; features of the performance technique and dance vocabulary of social dances are analyzed: Argentine Tango, Bachata, Meringue, Salsa, West Coast Swing, Jitterbug, Disco Coffs, as well as the Caribbean show, Latin show, and Caribbean dances - dance programs approved by the International Dance Organization for European and World Championships at the present stage; The specific differences of non-competitive and competitive social dance in the sociocultural space of the 21st century are revealed. Conclusions. The study revealed that at the present stage in the context of the development of the sports and competitive direction of social dances, their characteristic features are being transformed (the value of the visual component of the dance is enhanced, the technique of performing social dances, etc. is standardized) and functions (except for communicative, informational, emotional, social, recreational, psychotherapeutic, educational, aesthetic, visual, etc.) become dominant. Social dances at the present stage of the development of world dance culture, personify the combination of dance art (a traditional feature of social dances) and mastery (program preparation): art includes creativity, spontaneity, and self-expression, and mastery contributes to the creation of an aesthetic, artistic aspect, but without emphasis on personal creativity and self-expression.References
