Abstract

By 2030 the world population is expectedto reach8billion people, which demands that theworld food productionshould increase by at least40%.80%of this increasehas to be ensuredby a more intensivecrop production. Food, wine and tobacco industryis the second largesteconomicsector in the EuropeanUnion.Itemploys48 million peopleand its sharein the European economyisaround750billion Euros per year.

The basic principles of the food safetypolicywere regulated in the EU legislationin2002. Theyare intended to facilitatethe free trade offoodsthroughout the European Union, ensuring an equally high levelof consumer protectioninthe Member States.

The European food lawcovers allstages of the foodchain – fromanimal feedand food productionto their processing, storage, transportation, import and export, as well as retailing. Allfoodsand feed products producedand soldin the EUcan be traced‘from farm to fork’ through thisintegrated approach so that consumers will be well informed aboutthe content ofthe foods they consume. The foods cannothave health claims on their labels unless theyarescientifically provenandexplicitly approvedby the European Commission.
