The purpose of the article is to comprehensively study and highlight the modern activities of public libraries in the context of the development of distance services. The research methodology is based on the application of general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, systemic, and socio-communicative approach. Scientific novelty lies in the study of the main directions of transformation of library and information services, caused by the digitalisation of society, changes in user information requests and external challenges of modernity. The current needs of different categories of users, the level of accessibility of electronic resources and services are revealed, and an attempt is made to assess the organisational, personnel and technical resources of public libraries. Conclusions. The results of the study confirmed the hypothesis that the introduction of digital technologies has radically changed the essence, functions and mission of the modern library. Public libraries are being transformed from traditional book collections into multifunctional educational hubs and intellectual centres of the community, focused on meeting the information, educational and communication needs of users. They provide access not only to information resources and online tools, but also to computer technology, the Internet and a safe virtual space for learning and social interaction. The development of a digitised library is a complex process that requires financial, human and technological resources, as well as the consolidation of the efforts of librarians, IT specialists, authorities and the community. Inter-sectoral cooperation and partnership are of great importance, which creates conditions for the sustainable development of libraries, particularly in rural areas. A significant factor in the effective operation of libraries in the digital age is the systematic study of user needs and the formation of a service-oriented service model, which contributes to strengthening the positive image and competitiveness of the library.
