The purpose of the article is to analyze the trends of modern directing in the opera art of Ukraine. Methodology. The methodology of the research is based on an interdisciplinary approach, which allows us to use the achievements of musicology and theatre studies. The following methods are used in the research: a comparative method ( to compare the director's productions of opera performances of the past and present periods in Ukraine); a historical one (to analyze the emergence of a number of contradictions in the development of the opera genre and the emergence of the dominant opera directing over the conductor's interpretation of a musical work at the beginning of the XXI century); an analysis (to highlight the basic ethical and aesthetic approaches of modern directing in the productions of opera performances). Scientific Novelty. The scientific novelty of the research is to highlight the main trends and contradictions in the direction of opera in Ukraine at the beginning of the XXI century. Conclusions. Thus, the reformism in the European opera genre belongs to the director. The Opera Theatre in Ukraine is experiencing a stage of «awakening» in the context of the European opera experimentation, which is manifested in the new approaches of directors to the embodiment of opera stage performance. In this context, the main methods are the actualization of the plot, which involves the transfer of opera in the modern era, increasing metaphor, illusory, eclecticism, cinema, performance. The director’s philosophy is the extreme subjectivism, a metaphysical understanding of creative freedom, and revisionism of the narratives of classical works in the form of new directorial versions of famous performances.References
