Abstract

The purpose of the article is to analyse the sketches of stage costumes for the Transcarpathian Folk Choir of artists Fedir Manailo, Andrei Kotsko and to prove that they are artefacts that are codes of history. The methodology of the work includes scientific methods: analytical, structural-functional, generalising; methods of comparative analysis. The scientific novelty of the work is the study of codes of history on the example of theatrical and decorative art in museum collections of Transcarpathia. Conclusions. Based on the study of theoretical material in previous studies, in particular the monograph ‘Codes of Culture and “Double Coding” in Art’, it was stated that the code of history is a type of cultural codes with inherent features of collecting, storing, transmitting information in artefacts. Institutions for collecting, studying, storing and transmitting information are museums with expositions of artefacts. Having become acquainted with individual exhibits of museum collections of Transcarpathia, we can note that the following can be attributed to the codes of history with all the signs of information support: an outstanding museum building – Uzhhorod Castle, which has preserved the memory of past events in the region; institutions that support national memory and identity in the process of studying, storing and collecting collections of artifacts as works of art (People's Museum of Transcarpathian Ukraine, F. Manailo Memorial Museum, Transcarpathian Regional Y. Bokshai Art Museum); outstanding groups with the functions of reproducing the historical past and the present (Transcarpathian Folk Choir; Transcarpathian Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre); representatives of art (artists Y. Bokshai, A. Erdely, A. Kotska, F. Manailo, E. Medvetska-Lutak), who contributed to the development of cultural heritage; artefacts from the museum collections, which record the history and modernity of the region (costumes from different places in Transcarpathia; works of theatrical and decorative art by F. Manailo – sketches of four stage costumes, two concert posters, concert programme; A. Kotskyi – 150 sketches of stage costumes, two colour sketches of scenery, two black and white sketches of costumes for the play “Twelfth Night” by W. Shakespeare, two sketches of scenery for the play. Characteristic features, and in our case with codes of history, then in the sketches of stage costumes are noted stylistic originality and coloristic impeccability inherent in the folk clothing of the region of different localities, but also a thorough education received by the artists.
