The purpose of the article is on the basis of analysis and generalization of the main representatives and theorists of postmodernism to establish the constitutional qualities of artistic culture of this epoch, to identify its conceptual categories, and to simulate the own vision of the world conception of the period. The methodology of the research con-
sists in application of analytical, cultural, historical, axiological and systematic approaches for revealing the basic principles of art of the second half of the 20th – the beginning of the 21st century. Scientific novelty. The article develops a system of arguments in relation to the assertion that the leading categories of world conception of the covered period are
pluralism, intertextuality, and game. There was made a retrospective of the transformation of these definitions with the purpose to specify their essence in contemporary social and cultural conditions. There was proposed a clarification of the content of the studied epoch. Conclusions. Postmodernism is a complex and controversial stage in the development of
artistic culture. Its art constantly demonstrates its own willingness for a dialogue, the recognition of the value of any point of view and ideological orienting points, address to the texts of various historical periods and at the same time playful and cursory attitude to life and high ideals of society. The represented epoch seeks to combine the features of all times however remains fragmentary and discrete. It proclaims the absurdity of life, reopens the subjective world of human; it exalts the cult of an independent person, which opposes the generally accepted rules but is oriented tо the mass consumer. It recreates chaos and tries to rationally comprehend the high aesthetic and ethical ideals.
