Purpose of the article. The article is devoted to the issue of national features of the development of the requiem as a genre of funeral music in the English musical tradition and the creative interest of contemporary composers. Methodology. The study uses systematic and musical-cultural methods aimed at revealing the national and cultural context of the formation of professional musical creativity in England in the context of the interaction of various ethnic and liturgical traditions. The method of musical-style analysis is used to determine the specific stylistic characteristics of the funerary music in Anglicanism, which allows us to consider the creative experiences of the composers of the mid-20th - early 21st centuries in the context of the national tradition. Scientific novelty. National-cultural sources of the requiem in the English choral music were not studied in Ukrainian musicology, nor were modern compositional interpretations of this genre specifically considered. Given the specifics of the development of liturgical music in England, the research interest is turned to the genesis of the genre-style specificity of the funeral mass in the works of English composers. This problem largely compensates for the thematic gaps in the study of the English musical culture. Conclusions. The fate of the requiem in the English musical tradition developed in complex and contradictory conditions of interaction between Roman Catholic traditions and the reformist Anglican renewal of liturgical practice. Special dogmatic principles stipulate the "disappearance" of the genre of the funeral mass in Anglicanism and the formation of an appropriate burial order, which differs significantly from the Latin requiem. The style of the Anglican chant was formed in accordance with the requirements for the minimization of expressive musical means and clarity. Genre anthem are the most indicative for Anglican singing in stylistic terms and are in demand in contemporary compositional practice.
