The scientific novelty of the study lies in identifying the role of stage attire in establishing intercultural understanding and cooperation, which is the task of cultural diplomacy. Conclusions. The performing arts have a huge potential for self-expression, social transformations and intercultural communication. Stage costumes contribute to the effective communication of the director's intention to the audience, enhance the visual and narrative impression of stage productions. The skilful combination of design elements, fabrics and accessories in the characters’ clothes makes it possible to present the stage image as a symbol, to deepen the understanding of the action. Stage clothing as a component of culture can play an important role in cultural diplomacy, to promote intercultural dialogue. Stage costumes, combining aesthetics, symbolism and messages, are an expression of the universal language of creativity, which is able to unite different peoples. The perception and interpretation of the appearance of actors does not require knowledge of certain languages, which makes stage images universal, understandable to the audience, and foreign ones in particular. The colour, texture, design and symbolism of stage costumes can evoke synchronous emotions in a multicultural audience, and contribute to social cohesion.
