On Ukrainian DC electric locomotives the control of propulsive force and speed is carried out by the discrete (step) Power Management System, which provides three diagrams of connections of traction motors in the traction mode. However, in terms of energy losses in traction network from the irregular energy consumption such control system is very inefficient. Often, especially with non full-weight trains the electric locomotive with discrete power control in a certain range of speeds and oppositions to movement has excess capacity, which leads to irregular power consumption and increase of energy losses in traction network and power chain of traction mechanism.
In this mode the control of traction mechanism consists in alternating change of higher connection of traction motor to the lower one, leading to surges and fluctuations of energy consumption. To improve the coefficient of efficiency of traction motors, balancing a traction load in a traction power supply system, and thus improving the power coefficient of traction mechanism, it is suggested to input into unfilled area of power control between the highest and lowest characteristics, the additional intermediate native (running) traction characteristics.
They can be obtained by operative shutdown (temporary, in motion, and then, if necessary, an operative regeneration) of groups of motors (two engines in the branches) with P-connection. This will improve the controllability and expand the range of power control of traction mechanism. The running time of the locomotive will not change as the additional diagrams do not exclude the principal one, but complement it and are used if necessaryReferences
