The article studies the algorithms for the lossy compression of images. Such possibility of significant lossy compression of images is stipulated by the peculiarities of information perception by the sense organs of a man. Creation of new data carriers and distribution of global computer networks caused rapid increase in the volume of information. It is caused by the fact that storage of images, presented in digital form, requires large storage capacity, and their transmission through communication channels requires considerable time. Major efforts have been directed to the study, analysis and further development of the methods, used for image compression and permitting to reduce the amount of redundant data.
Thus, the problem of storage and transmission of graphic information in the most compact form is quite topical.
