Latin American Dances in Modern Multimedia Forms

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to identify the features of the representation and development of the vocabulary of Latin American dance in multimedia forms of the first quarter of the 21st century using the example of a music video clip. Research methodology. A typological and systemic method was applied, thanks to which the features of Latin American dance were clarified and its place in the system of choreographic art was clarified; the method of comparative analysis, the evolutionary method, and the method of art history analysis were used. Scientific novelty. The issues of the development of the vocabulary of Latin American dance in modern multimedia forms were considered using the example of a music video clip; the typological features of the connection between the text and the visual series (according to E. Goodwin) were analysed. It was found that the appeal to the vocabulary of Latin American dances is due to: the specifics of the music, the concept of the music video, the desire to strengthen the main idea of the song with a dance-archetype or dance-symbol. Conclusions. The study found that as of early 2020s, the characteristic trend of Latin American dance in multimedia formats (music video) is remediation and hybridisation with other directions and styles (in particular, modern dance jazz dance, hip-hop), as well as various audiovisual texts, genres and practices. At the same time, the evolution of Latin American dance occurs in accordance with different directions of interaction with the musical-sensual and ideological-narrative component of the music video, which can be conditionally defined as the use of Latin American dance vocabulary as part of the overall production, an attempt to connect it with the instrumental / vocal part. Due to the complex synthesis of various styles and directions of choreography, as well as the musical-visual interaction characteristic of the music video as one of the most popular multimedia forms, the evolution of Latin American dance is extremely dynamic and largely determines the direction of development of not only commercial, but also sports (in particular in the formation and dance show categories) and social Latin American dance.
