The purpose of the work is to substantiate and consider the art of directing in the context of the artist’s professional activity, his artistic methods of visual solution of a stage work. The research methodology consists in the application of the functional method to determine the cognitive and semantic components of directing art, its dominant principles of efficiency and productivity of stagecraft, the ability of the artist to professionally use expressive artistic techniques in the visual solution of the performance; the art method for analysing the artistic and aesthetic value, creative uniqueness and expressiveness of the master director’s stage work, its imaginative dynamics created by the director’s imagination and fantasy; an axiomatic method for determining the phenomenon of the art of directing in the creation of an original construction of a stage form thanks to the figurative and stylistic interpretation of a dramatic work, peculiar, key natural processes in the director’s interpretation of action images of role-playing material by means of the author’s own idea of a theatrical performance; the semiotic method for determining the metaphorical, unique vision of the multi-meaningful, associative image of the created play, its artistic techniques of iconic symbolism; an analytical method for considering the attributes that serve as characteristic features of a character’s role and are a significant difference in the artistic nature of an image, an allegorical figure or a historical person in the artist’s general stage vision of the future theatrical form; empirical method for purposeful characterisation of the means of expressiveness of a stage work to the corresponding idea, hypothesis, supertask, and fixation of the creative decision of the performance determined by the director’s vision, which takes place with the help of artistic design and masterful techniques of theatrical form. The scientific novelty of the study consists in the systematisation of the use of artistic techniques as components, attributes of the shaping of the performance by the master of the art of directing in his author’s interpretation. Conclusions. So, we can come to the conclusion that the artistic and creative activity of a drama theatre director requires considerable talent, effort, painstaking work on the development of imagination, fantasy, and emotional memory to create a unique stage canvas that could be called a full-fledged work of art. And also, to have knowledge of all constituent components, attributes, artistic techniques of a figurative solution of the theatrical form and the perfect ability to consistently perform all stages of the director’s idea in its embodiment.
