Abstract

The purpose of the work is to reveal the process of identity formation as a central, basic problem of the cultural space, determined by the complex interaction of historical, socio-cultural, linguistic, religious factors, as well as the dynamics of civic and ethnic self-consciousness and regional differences. A large number of leading scientists and direct mentions of ‘intellectual discussions’ and their goal of ‘creating a discourse of intellectual and cultural elites’ indicate that academic work is not only descriptive, but also active, aimed at ‘constructing’ or ‘rebuilding’ Ukrainian identity. This affects public consciousness and potentially state policy, emphasising the performative aspect of scientific research in the process of nation-building. Methodology of the work. In the cultural discourse, modern and postmodern approaches to the formation of identity are distinguished. Modern approaches emphasise the methods of constructing and preserving the integrity and stability of identity. Postmodern approaches emphasise the mechanisms of avoiding fixation and preserving freedom of choice, considering identity as an object of constant transformations and changes, which is formed from various sources. Scientific novelty. The full-scale invasion became a catalyst for an unprecedented transformation of Ukrainian identity. This Russian aggression accelerated the transition of society from ethnocentric to civic-political self-awareness. Conclusions. There is a significant strengthening of civic identity, an increase in the role of the Ukrainian language as a marker of resistance and unity, as well as the formation of a new national memory based on the common experience of struggle.
